The Parthenon in its ancient context can be understood simultaneously as an idealized representation of Athenian democracy, as a trophy celebrating the Athenian military victory over the Persians, and as a monument to Athenian imperialism over its Greek neighbors. It also features some of the most beautiful marble carving from anywhere in the ancient Mediterranean. And most of that carving is no longer in Athens, but rather in … the British Museum! Surprise!
