ROGUE Magazine: The Peplos and the Myth of Classical Whiteness

Marble funerary statues of a maiden and a little girl, both wearing the peplos. Image from The Met.

My final project takes the form of Rogue Magazine, a parody of Vogue Magazine. Within this edition, I examine the peplos, a dress worn by women in ancient Greece. In class, we discussed the misconception that all statues and architecture in the ancient world were white; this misconception applied to the peplos, too. I also discuss its representation in the fashion world today via Dior’s 2022 Cruise Collection. Simply click through the pages of this slideshow and pretend you’re flipping the pages of a magazine!
