The Parthenon in its ancient context can be understood simultaneously as an idealized representation of Athenian democracy, as a trophy celebrating the Athenian military victory over the Persians, and as a monument to Athenian imperialism over its Greek neighbors. It also features some of the most beautiful marble carving from anywhere in the ancient Mediterranean.
