The Qur’an and the Epic of Sunjata

The Qur’an and the Epic of Sunjata are not on the list of required texts for all sections of Core 151. Should they be? Does adding texts from outside the traditional “Western” “canon” address some of the critiques of this course, and of the current Core more broadly? Is there a danger of tokenism? Does it matter if the instructor of the course has little or even no training or expertise in these added texts? Of course, none of the instructors of Core 151 (or Core 152) has expertise in all of the required texts, especially not when they first start teaching the course. Does the lack of expertise matter more if the texts come from a completely different time/place/culture than the others in the course, or from the area of the instructor’s training?
