This game was designed to explore the historical context of the Qur’an. Many people who are unfamiliar with Islam are surprised by the personal nature of moral decisions. Many rules set forth in the Qur’an are not absolute and instead focus on your motivation for your actions. This story-game tries to recreate what it might have been like to be alive during the seventh century in Mecca. You will play as a 20 year old merchant in Mecca, named Thabet. While I was originally considering creating multiple games, after rereading Exodus and the Book of Mark, I realized that these are already written as journey stories. Although there are differences between the archaeological record and Exous, it’s easy to imagine yourself journeying along with the Israelites, or following Jesus in the Book of Mark! The Qur’an is not organized like a journey story, so this presentation is designed for comparison with biblical texts. I hope you enjoy the game and that it makes you think about the differences between Abrahamic religions!
